Dr. Lawrence Houston Scholarship Fund Application

The New Jersey Chapter of The Association of Black Psychologists (NJABPsi) invites student members to apply for the prestigious Dr. Lawrence Houston Scholarship Fund by submitting an essay on the topic below.

Essay Topic & Instructions:

What Have You Done for Your People Lately?

In your essay, describe how you have utilized your education and experience to advocate for, assist, and/or empower Black individuals. Explain how your efforts align with the mission of NJABPsi and further the legacy of The Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi). Additionally, on the final page of your essay, list the activities you have participated in over the past year with NJABPsi/ABPsi. Include a brief description of how you would contribute to NJABPsi/ABPsi if selected as the scholarship recipient.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Must be in an accredited institution of higher education pursuing an advanced degree (master’s or doctorate) in Psychology (e.g., School, Clinical, Counseling) or a related discipline as determined by the scholarship committee.

  2. Must be a paid NJABPsi Student Member. If not currently a member, applicants must be willing to actively participate in NJABPsi initiatives (e.g., serving as a student officer, program presenter, engaging in a mentor/mentee relationship with an NJABPsi professional member/Elder, or contributing to NJABPsi’s mission of enhancing the emotional well-being of people of color). 

Essay Rules:

  1. Title Page: Include your name, school and department name, academic year, mailing address, and email address on a separate title page.

    • Do not include your name on any other pages of your document.

  2. Submission: Email your essay to NJABPSI@gmail.com no later than Friday, January 31, 2025.

  3. Formatting: Essays must:

    • Be no longer than three (3) double-spaced, single-sided pages (750 words).

    • Use a 12-point font with one-inch margins.

    • Be numbered on all pages (excluding the title page).

  4. File Format: Submit as a Word document (no PDFs).

  5. Eligibility Restrictions: Previous first-place winners are not eligible to apply.

  6. Essay Limit: One essay submission per student. 

Prizes and Review Protocol:

  • First Place: $700 | Second Place: $300 

  • Winners will be recognized at the in .

  • All submissions will be reviewed by the Lawrence Houston Scholarship Fund (LHSF) Committee. The committee will consist of at least NJABPsi members, appointed by the President and approved by the Executive Board.
